Rio’s Really Dirty Water for the Olympics

Bodies of water in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which are intended to be used for next summer’s Olympic Games, are so contaminated that athletes who swim or boat in them could become sick. The Associated Press (AP), a U.S.-based news service, conducted an analysis of the water quality there. High levels of viruses and bacteria from human feces were found. Some of the athletes who are training in Rio have already become infected and sick. Brazilian officials say that the water will be safe for the athletes competing in the games.

The water became contaminated from untreated sewage, which runs into the rivers and streams flowing into these bodies of water designated for use during the Olympics. Water contamination is a persistent problem in Rio, a city of 6.32 million people that sits on the Atlantic Ocean and is home to the Rodrigo de Freitas Lake. Many of the city’s iconic beaches are deserted right now because of the raw sewage - water from people’s toilets, sinks, and showers - in the ocean and lake water.

This summer, Olympic athletes have been swimming and boating in the water as a part of the Olympic qualifying events. More than 10,000 participants from 205 countries are estimated to compete in Rio’s 2016 Summer Olympics.

내년 하계 올림픽이 열리게 될 브라질 리우데자네이루의 호수가 너무 오염되어 있어 그 곳에서 수영하고 보트를 타는 선수들이 건강상의 문제를 겪게 될 수 있을 정도이다. 미국의 통신사 AP가 그 곳의 수질을 분석하였다. 인간의 배설물에서 나온 바이러스와 박테리아 레벨이 꽤 높게 측정되었다. 리우에서 연습하던 일부 선수들은 이미 감염되어 아픈 상태이다. 브라질 당국은 올림픽 게임에서 경쟁할 선수들에게 그 물이 안전할 것이라고 말한다. 그 물은 화학약품으로 처리되지 않은 하수로 인해 오염되었으며, 오염된 물은 강과 개울을 따라 흘러 올림픽 경기를 위해 쓰이게 될 호수로 흘러 들어간다. 632만명이 살고 있는 대서양에 위치한 도시인 리우에는 Rodrigo de Freitas 호수가 있으며, 수질 오염은 그 곳의 지속적인 문제이다. 리우의 여러 유명한 해변들은 화장실, 싱크대, 샤워시설로부터 떠내려온 오물이 바다와 호수로부터 흘러 들어오는 바람에 인적이 뜸한 상태이다. 올해 여름, 올림픽 선수들은 올림픽 경기 출전을 위한 게임으로 인해 그 물에서 수영하고 보트를 타며 훈련해왔다. 205개 국가로부터 온 1만명 이상의 참가자가 2016년 리우 하계올림픽에 참여할 예정이다.
